Delphinium elatum | Double Innocence
This Delphinium is grown from seed from New Zealand Delphiniums and it is a pure white delphinium with fully double white flowers, borne on relatively short spikes.
Delphiniums will thrive in a full sun position but will also grow in partially shaded positions. The plants are very hardy and tolerant of both frost and a winter freeze, however some shelter or permeable shelter via loose leaved shrubs or small trees is required.
Delphiniums are considered gross feeders so they like rich soil - our plants thrive from a feeding of sheep manure. They do however like a well-drained position. Delphiniums do not like wet feet as they will rot. Cover with mulch to keep moist but be sure to use slug bait as Delphiniums can be taken to the ground by slugs and snails overnight!
Be sure to plant in a raised position - we add a hand full of gravel to assist with drainage. If you plant your plants too close together it will encourage them to grow tall whereas a wider spacing will help to control height.
We like to stake our plants to ensure that the stems do not get blown over, and you can also grow through netting or other frameworks to keep them upright. Once your plant has finished flowering, cut each flower spike down to 5 cm above ground; reduce water at this time, but then gradually increase it again once new growth begins.
Cut your plants down in mid-winter and cover with mulch and a sprinkling of slug bait and then start a feeding regime again when plants have put on around 10cm of growth.
Delphiniums appreciate water when they have leafed up but be sure that you do not over water them.
Powdery Mildew can be a problem, but we tend to use a baking soda spray regularly before it appears as once you see it, it is too late!
Only small numbers due to low seed germination
