This lovely tulbaghia which hails from South Africa has dainty heads of fragrant lilac pink flowers on stems that stand proud above the attractive blue-grey foliage.
This little plant adds both colour and texture to borders and is easy care. A clump forming semi-evergreen perennial Society Garlic as it is also known had the added bonus of being drought tolerant once established.
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil. Plants can be easily split once established.
Flowers are also pretty for picking. The leaves and roots can be used as a substitute for garlic in recipes for a mild garlic and chives flavour. The plant seems to have antibacterial, antifungal and antithrombotic properties. Some studies suggesting that compounds found in plants like Tulbaghia may have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects especially useful for topical applications.
