Also known as Pitcher Sage, this fabulous drought-tolerant perennial is related to the salvia and has upward faced almost Penstemon like tubular flowers that are the most beautiful carmine papal purple. The stately flower spikes arise from a rosette of grey-green foliage that has distinctive arrow-shaped leaves that are very aromatic.
Flowers are enjoyed by both bees and butterflies. Prune back old stems in autumn to the basal leaves. Flowering is from summer right through into late autumn and ours often still flower in winter when it is mild. In warmer climates it is evergreen and in colder temperatures it is deciduous.
Lepechinia salviae enjoys full sun and a well-drained humus rich soil.
