Lobelia | Ruby Slippers
This beautiful lobelia has showy deep scarlet red flower spikes that rise above medium green foliage making it an excellent choice in the shade garden or they are as equally at home in containers. This particular variety maintains a good form throughout early to mid-summer and into autumn and is an excellent choice for planting in the border. Flowers are great for cutting and doing this will encourage reflowering. This striking plant is a herbaceous perennial with an upright spreading growth habit.
Lobelia siphilitica is a relatively low maintenance plant and can be tidied up in early spring before it resumes draft growth for the season although we remove the flower stems after flowering has finished. A great choice for attracting butterflies to your garden. It looks particularly stunning en masse and enjoys moist soil and will even tolerate some standing water. This variety can also be used as a cut flower. Excellent for using as a specimen or massing in the border, containers or tubs, but do keep the soil moist or add mulch to assist with this.
We use ours around the pond and as well as other areas of our gardens to great effect and whilst it prefers a shaded spot it can cope with a bit of sun although it will appreciate some respite from the hot afternoon sun. Can be easily split in spring to provide more plants.
Height 60-90cm with flower stems x clumping
