Penstemon | Garnet Spires
Penstemon Garnet is a bushy, vigorous perennial with smooth, narrow, dark green leaves and small, tubular, deep wine-red flowers borne along gracefully arching spikes, giving way to interesting seed pods. Flowering is from early summer to late autumn. It is one of the longest living Penstemons and is semi-evergreen and has been the recipient of the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society. An excellent cut flower that is also loved by butterflies and other pollinators.
Once established Garnet is quite a drought-tolerant and enjoys either a full sun or partially shaded position. This is a lovely plant that has a striking impact in garden beds, cottage gardens and rock gardens. It is also quite tolerant of most soils and does not require fertilising. Deadhead to maintain the vigour of the plant and encourage further flowering. Cut back in early spring to encourage new growth.
