Pelargonium tomentosum | Peppermint Geranium

Pelargonium tomentosum | Peppermint Geranium

Peppermint geranium is a low-growing small shrub with large leaves that have a soft and velvety texture and a strong and fresh peppermint scent. The leaves are palm-shaped, heart-shaped at the base, and are 3–5 cm wide and up to 6 cm long. The leaves are soft due to a cover of glandular hairs that give a velvet touch and sheen to the leaves. When rubbed or crushed the leaves give off their lovely peppermint fragrance.
Peppermint geraniums can grow up to 60 cm tall and 120 cm wide. They produce small white flowers through summer and autumn too.
They need good ventilation, so they're fine in a windy site,
Water moderately during the growing season from spring to summer, and only sparingly in winter.
In cold-winter climates, the plant will die once frost sets in, so it's wise to pop it in a pot and bring indoors till after the last frosts.
It prefers full sun but will tolerate part shade.
In very warm climates, some afternoon shade may be beneficial.
Shadier conditions may produce leggy plants that require frequent pinching back to keep the plants full and lush, and so that gives more opportunities for use in the kitchen!
Peppermint geraniums are edible. The leaves and flowers have a strong mint scent and can be used to flavour cakes, puddings, pies, biscuits, jellies, and chocolate cake. You can line the bottom of cake tins with leaves before cooking for an interesting flavour. You can also use the leaves to make a tea infusion by steeping 3 teaspoons of freshly chopped leaves, or 1 teaspoon of dried leaves, in 250mls of boiling water.
Such a great plant and were thrilled to be able to offer it for sale!
