Phygelius capensis | Deep Rose

Phygelius capensis | Deep Rose

Phygelius or Cape Fuchsias are a native of South Africa but are surprisingly hardy perennials or small shrubs. Plants grow to make a bushy, upright mound of green foliage, with stems that are stained red in colour as they emerge and then turn green that bear showy clusters of fuchsia-like flowers beginning sometimes as early as spring and continuing into autumn.

This plant whilst very attractive is an enthusiastic grower and spreads by suckering so remove the suckers to prevent it spreading or put it in an area where it can be left to run free. Deadhead to promote new flowers.  Cooler climates tend to keep the plant under control but warmer ones you can find they tend to growth vigorously.  Keep well-watered in hotter climates.

This beautiful selection has raspberry coloured tubular flowers with white stripes internally.  Phygelius flowers are great for cutting and last well in a vase. Happy in full sun to partial shade.  Prune in later winter to early spring to encourage bushy growth using sharp secateurs.

In frost-prone areas, shelter from cold winds and protect with mulch.  A great choice for banks as well as garden borders and woodland plantings. Hardy to about -10 Celsius but not much more than that.
