Salvia uliginosa | Bog Sage

Salvia uliginosa | Bog Sage

Salvia uliginosa is a fast-growing upright perennial with stunning clear blue flowers with white throats that are on willowy stems.  Also known as Bog Sage, this plant forms an airy thicket of tall stems flowering from late spring and in milder climates, it can flower right into autumn.

This plant will spread vigorously via rhizomes, so be aware whilst it is striking to look at it does like some space to do its thing! If however, you do not give it an overly moist area, it tends not to spread quite as vigorously. It is a perfect choice for the back of the border and it is a plant that is adored by both bees and butterflies.

An excellent cut flower either fresh or dried.  The recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society, Salvia uliginosa performs best in full sun in moist but well-drained soils. Although it does have a preference of moist soil, Bog Sage will tolerate drier conditions.

We find that if it flops over, we just cut it to the ground and it comes away again.  We also cut it back in early spring to keep it tidy.
