Viburnum opulus | Snowball Tree

Viburnum opulus | Snowball Tree

Known to many as the Snowball Tree, and also sometimes the Guelder-Rose is beautiful shrub is grown for its spectacular ball shaped flowers. The plant produces pure white flowers that are slightly perfumed and look like snowballs, flowering from the end of winter and right through into summer.

The stunning  flower clusters are profuse, starting out a divine lime green and maturing to white and create quite a show in the garden with the varying stages of colouring on each branch. Moving into autumn, the leaves put on a lovely show turning a purplish red. The cut stems are wonderful for floral work. The leaves are shaped like maple leaves.

These hardy plants are super easy to grow, tolerate most soil types and become the focal point of your garden when in bloom.  Blooms last for around five weeks before falling to the ground petal by petal, resembling falling snow - a very pretty picture.

For these plants, pruning should be done in the early spring, before they leaf out. Shear or prune the outer branch tips to shape and reduce the size of the plant. Repeat this pruning technique throughout the summer, as needed. As the plant matures, renewal pruning will be needed and we often cut ours right back - they are pretty tough so you cannot do anything too wrong with this shrub.

Once established, this plant is frost and drought tolerant. To perform to their best they prefer a full sun or partly shade position is fine. The Snowball Tree grows well in a pot, or as a hedge, mass planting or specimen in the garden.
