Abutilon x hybrid | Kentish Belle
Abutilons are semi evergreen shrubs with arching stems of dark green leaves and pendant bell-shaped flowers. Kentish Belle has strikingly rich red and yellow blooms which gently flare at the bottom unlike other Abutilons which are often cup shaped and goes on flowering all through summer. Lovely against a wall in a sunny site but often benefits from a stake at the base of the plant as the stems are quite soft. This one enjoys a good degree of hardiness down to -5°.
Plant into full sun or part shade into fairly good soil, adding compost is always a good idea.
This beauty will grow to around 2m tall and wide, and benefits from a good pruning after flowering. We often take the shears to it to keep it in shape and promote extra bloom time. in warmer areas it will flower almost all year!
We do find that because the wood is so soft, the borers will occasionally get in there, so we add wax to the end of the larger stems which have been pruned.
