Aquilegia vulgaris | Lime Sorbet

Aquilegia vulgaris | Lime Sorbet

Aquilegia vulgaris 'Lime Sorbet' Columbine or Grannys Bonnet.

Of all the spring plants in the garden Aquilegias are amongst the loveliest.
Also fondly known as Grannys Bonnet or Columbine, there are so many varieties it's hard to pick a favourite, so here at Puriri Lane @ Addenbrooke we have quite a selection!

Aquilegias are known for their exquisitely pretty blooms and 'Lime Sorbet' is no exception.

Pale green buds open to fully double, spurless pale lime coloured blooms which fade to white, held above their equally delicate ferny gray green foliage. A welcome sight in Spring. The seed heads add a great texture and they're great for picking too!

Aquilegias prefer a full sun or dappled shady spot but will tolerate deeper shade if the ground is kept moist but not soaked. Under deciduous trees is perfect, but they look just as lovely at the front or middle of cottage style borders, where they will grow to 90cm tall and 40cm wide.

NOTE

Plants tend to hunker down over the winter especially in colder areas they are essentially deciduous but in milder climates we find that they can retain a small amount of foliage.

Aquilegia hybridise readily so new plants will have some variation to the parent plant.  You can actually divide Aquilegias in spring but be aware they do resent disturbance so may take a while to settle in again before they re-flower.

Flowers can be used as a cut flower in floral work.  If growing for cutting, you may wish to treat these as a biennial rather than a perennial and plant fresh plants each season and self-sown prodigy are often not identical to the parent due to cross pollination.  For the longest vase life, flowers should be harvested early in their flowering cycle before they drop any petals. There are many, many varieties to choose from that are great for cutting and you can see more of our Aquilegias here

Please note that contact with the sap can irritate sensitive skins.
