Astilbe | Thunbergii hybrid | Professor Van der Weilen

Astilbe | Thunbergii hybrid | Professor Van der Weilen

Astilbes are the mainstays of shade and woodland gardens. They are attractive clump-forming perennials which have graceful, fern-like leaves but the most beautiful part is the arching creamy plume-like flower panicles that rise above the foliage on slender, red-stained stems.
Professor Van der Wielen flowers can reach up to 90cm and appear in late spring to early summer and make an excellent cut flower as well as drying to an attractive biscuit colour and flowers can be removed or left on the plant for winter interest.

Astilbes are tolerant of very heavy shade but conversely adapt well to a dappled shade position.  They can be planted in a full sun area, but you would need a cool summer and adequate moisture - we mulch our plants to retain moisture.  If you have hot summers, then shade is important for success with this plant.

Professor Van der Weilen is also suited to pond areas and streams or as an edging for shady spots, so really a great all-rounder.  Butterflies are attracted to the nectar of these plants and as mentioned previously they cut well and also dry well.

Plants can be easily divided once established and splitting congested clumps after a few years will ensure maximum flowering.
