Cavendishia acuminata
Cavendishia acuminata is one of those rarely cultivated, plants that provide plenty of interest in the garden - actually a relative of the blueberry it is not a commonly seen shrub.
Whilst evergreen, it is not overly cold hardy, but established plants will cope with a light frost, so if you are somewhere that experiences colder temperatures, shelter will be required.
This attractive plant features interesting perky reddish pink new growth and tubular to pitcher shaped red flowers that have creamy tips. It has an arching growth habit and whilst a lovely plant for the garden, they also make an excellent potted plant, where its drooping branches and very pretty flowers can be seen to best effect. They do like a slightly acidic soil but acid fertilizer is not necessary unless your water is very alkaline.
Plants flower in late summer and are happy in either a full sun position or partially shaded position but do like respite from the hot afternoon sun.
