Gaura lindheimeri | Cool Breeze
If ever there was a pretty perennial then I would have to say this is it.
Also known as whirling butterflies and Lindheimer's Beeblossom this romantic floaty perennial is a must-have in the garden. This is a new variety is pure white with green stamens and pure white buds. Gaura enjoys a particularly long flowering season which is normally from early summer right the way through into autumn. The little butterfly-like flowers dance in the breeze. A perfect choice for the border or your white garden.
The plants form a vase-shaped clump up to about 1.2 metres high by about 90cm wide and the branches laden with their pretty flowers on wand-like stems arch outwards laden with flowers.
The great thing about this plant is that it is low care, and it thrives on neglect. It is drought tolerant once established and tolerates heat, humidity, full sun and partial shade. Butterflies and bees are attracted to the flowers. Plants will self-sow but are easily removed and transplanted to other areas of the garden. As Gaura has a thick taproot, the plants do not like to be divided but as they self-sow, this will give you plenty more plants if you want them that are easily transplanted when small.
Whilst deadheading is not necessary, cutting back in midsummer will encourage new flowering stems which will also result in a more compact and tidier plant. A perfect choice for a pot, a rock garden, cottage gardens or naturalistic plantings.
Plants are deciduous in winter except in milder climates where it will be evergreen.
We also have Gaura Sparkle White which has a touch of pink
Taxonomic research in the early 2000's moved this and other Gaura species into the genus Oenothera, so the plant becomes Oenothera lindheimeri, although that name change has not been adopted in the horticultural industry
