Montanoa grandiflora | Tree Daisy

Montanoa grandiflora | Tree Daisy

Limited Numbers

If ever there was a plant to herald the arrival of autumn then I think this is it!

Throughout Spring and Summer this Tree Daisy as it is also known puts on lots of lush green growth and it does take up quite a big footprint in the garden at around 3 metres by ultimately about the same in width.  As the daylight hours decline in the lead up to winter, out comes this spectacular and prolific display of white daisies. It also has the most delicious scent, some say like chocolate chip cookies!

The bees and butterflies and moths whose food is starting to decline are in a frenzy as they love the nectar the flowers produce!  The tree becomes almost totally smothered in these flowers until you can hardly see the tree for the flowers - it is truly a sight to behold.

Ours flowers on right into winter.  They are said to be marginally frost hardy but we have a couple around the garden and the shelter from the deciduous trees do seem to protect the plant, so we will see!  The striking chartreuse flower seed heads that come next we think are definitely bouquet worthy - particularly when there is so little in flower in the cooler months and these persist through winter.

After flowering, it is time to cut the plant back hard so that it will start all over again in the spring with fresh new growth.  Definitely a plant for the back of the border!
