Penstemon Raven is an elegant perennial that has stunning dark, deep dramatic claret/burgundy coloured flowers with a dark throat in a similar shape to a foxglove. Be sure to remove the faded flowers regularly to prolong flowering. Apply a mulch around the base of the plant to protect the roots from frost damage and cut back the plant in spring when new shoots appear low down at the base.
This easy-to-grow perennial will quickly form large, leafy clumps and is perfect for adding a splash of colour to the middle of a sunny, well-drained border. If you deadhead regularly, the flowers will persist until the first frosts. Whilst it is essentially frost hardy, if you experience very cold winters then you will need to provide some protection. Likes full sun to partial shade. Penstemons also make great cut flowers and are loved by bees.
