Phygelius aequalis | Yellow Trumpet | Cape Fuchsia

Phygelius aequalis | Yellow Trumpet | Cape Fuchsia

Phygelius aequalis or Cape Fuchsias are a native of South Africa but are surprisingly hardy perennials. Plants grow to make a bushy, upright mound of green foliage, that bear showy clusters of fuchsia-like flowers beginning in mid-summer and continuing into autumn. This plant hails from the tip of South Africa and is commonly found along damp stream edges so is quite adaptable to it's conditions,

Position your plant in a damp, sunny area in the garden. Cape fuchsia will quickly fill in any space you provide it with, and some find it fills in too quickly!

Phygelius spreads by underground stems and rooting underground branches. This pretty plant is usually polite during its first couple of years, but once established, it will wind its way through other plants, popping new stems up in the middle of shrubs and perennial clumps and towering over them, so any nearby plant that is shorter is likely to be overwhelmed.  The idea would be to contain it or plant it in a pot if you don't have lots of room for it to move about.

This beautiful selection has creamy-lemon blooms, a wonderful shade that will blend well with most plants.  Phygelius flowers are great for cutting. Happy in full sun to partial shade.  Prune in later winter to early spring to encourage bushy growth using sharp secateurs.

In frost-prone areas, shelter from cold winds and protect with mulch.
