Phylica pubescens syn.P plumosa | Flannel Flower

Phylica pubescens syn.P plumosa | Flannel Flower

Also known as Flannel Flower, this is a truly underrated shrub and if you are into drying flowers as well as having something to cut in late winter for the vase or for floral work then this is just what you need.

A rounded shrub that grows reasonably vigorously that produces the most beautiful creamy, buff feathery flowers that smother the bush and are as the name suggests like flannel - soft and furry and definitely a flower arranger's dream.

The plants have year round interest with narrow pale green foliage and the new shoots are rusty coloured.  Phylica plumosa enjoys well drained soils which are not too dry and lots of sunshine.

These plants can tolerate a wide range of conditions and are also great to grow in coastal areas.  Winter foraging bees will appreciate these flowers at a time when not a lot is around.  If you are using your flowers for cutting this will help to retain the shape of the plant. Lightly prune back in late spring to maintain a compact shape and prevent the plants from becoming woody.

Phylica is tolerant of mild frosts so is relatively hardy but protection is required in very cold climates.
