Verbascum phoeniceum | Violetta

Verbascum phoeniceum | Violetta

An evergreen perennial this very pretty Verbascum Violetta has flat-faced rich violet coloured flowers held on airy spikey stems. Flowering from late spring to summer the flowers stems rise proudly above the flat rosette of leaves.  This Verbascum is shorter than many we do but still a stunning addition to the garden.

Vita Sackville-West wrote in 1936 that her verbascums looked as though 'a colony of tiny butterflies had settled all over them'. Verbascum phoeniceum looks wonderful with old roses or in the fronts of soft coloured Hydrangeas. A favourite cottage garden combination is to grow them with towering hollyhocks, or with delphiniums in a myriad of colours.  Their height makes you think that they should be positioned at the back of the border but they certainly look great at the front of the garden where their stately spires can be admired. The flowers can be dried face down for use in Pot Pourri and whilst they are not the best at lasting as a cut flower, they still look pretty popped in arrangements.  Verbascums are happy in full sun to partial shade and like a well-drained position, they are quite drought tolerant once established.  Bees love the accessibility of the nectar with these pretty open-faced flowers.
