Eupatorium maculatum
Eupatorium maculatum is a striking plant hailing from North America that adds stature to the garden along with its attractive flowers and it is easy to grow. Commonly known as Joe Pye Weed, this is strong growing perennial which will add presence to your garden.
The plants are known for their strong erect purple stained stems that are branched with attractive flat-topped flowers that are about 10-12 cm in diameter and are a very pretty mauve pink colour. The word "maculata" means marked with irregular blotches or mottled. The plants flower profusely from around mid-summer into autumn and even look striking throughout the winter months as they have ornamental seed heads and if you are somewhere that experiences hoar frosts and snow then they look beautiful throughout the winter months. A very elegant plant.
Highly popular with overseas garden designers this upright perennial combines beautifully with ornamental grasses such as our Calmagrostis Karl Foerster and Overdam as well as Asters and Helianthus
A perfect choice for either the border, in wild meadow flower plantings, cottage gardens as well as being excellent to grow as a cut flower so an all-round great choice for most garden styles. Basically this plant is trouble free and low maintenance and will perform well in a full sun position but will tolerate some shade. It will grow in clay soils and will tolerate medium to wet soils but it does soils that are humus rich. With the right conditions, the plants will grow quickly.
Simply cut the plant to the ground in late winter and it will come away vigorously in the spring.
The flowers are fragrant and most attractive to pollinators in search of nectar so loved by bees and butterflies.
Hardy | Winter dormant
Height | 1.5m - 2m x 1.2 m Wide
