Perovskia atriplicifolia | Blue Spire
Perovskia atriplicifolia Blue Spire also known as Russian Sage is a woody based deciduous, bushy perennial with long terminal panicles of beautiful small lavender blue flowers that are borne on silver stems with attractive aromatic grey-green leaves. The stems are so chalky in appearance that they appear to be white and they make a fantastic statement on their own.
Perovskia will bloom for weeks on end from mid-summer right through into autumn. The plant whilst delicate looking is tough and is drought resistant making it an excellent addition to the garden it also has no problem growing in poor soils.
The trick to longevity though is that these plants require excellent drainage in dry soil and also a full sun position.
This plant looks stunning in a cottage or Mediterranean style garden planted as either single plants or in clusters to intensify its presence. Planted with the colours of Echinacea, Heleniums or the texture of grasses will further highlight this striking plants.
Plants are tolerant of salty conditions and are also loved by butterflies and bees. Cut the plants almost to the ground in late winter or early spring as soon as the new growth appears.
