Sanguisorba officinalis | Great Burnet

Sanguisorba officinalis | Great Burnet

Sanguisorba officinalis - also commonly known as Burnet - are a striking addition to the garden, being both handsome in flower and foliage. They are trouble-free to grow and are fantastic for creating a "see-through" effect in your garden border. Sanguisorbas are happy in either sun or a partially shaded position.

Sanguisorba officinalis is both an elegant and a tall plant that will create a lovely wispy effect. Their flowers are upright at first and then as they age they droop like catkins and are a rosy red in colour. Flowering can be from late spring through and into autumn so they are an excellent choice if you want something that lasts in the garden.  The bottlebrush flowers and the toothed foliage is a great choice for the wildflower and cottage style garden. They plant particularly well alongside cranesbill geraniums and achilleas.

The flowers are also excellent for cutting and drying.
