Scabiosa atropurpurea | Snowmaiden
Also known as Pin Cushion Flower and Sweet Scabious, Scabiosa "Snowmaiden" has sparkling white blooms that are cottage garden favourites. Loved by both bees and butterflies, Snowmaiden has fragrant blooms and lasts well in a long vase. It looks beautiful in a mix and match bouquet in a mason jar or stunning in an elegant bouquet of all whites and greens.
Happy in poor dry soil and once it is established it is fairly drought tolerant but some summer water is appreciated to improve appearance and a longer flower season. An easy, low maintenance cut and come again cut-flower with long wiry stems. Cutting or deadheading often will extend flowering into late autumn.
Birds love the dried seed heads that appear after flowering right through into winter so we leave our seedheads on for the birds. - they also look great in a vase dried. Will self-sow, but may come back mauve rather than white. Happy in sun but will tolerate some shade.
