Thymus serpyllum | Albus | Creeping White Thyme

Thymus serpyllum | Albus | Creeping White Thyme

Wild creeping thyme is mildly scented, and can actually be used in cooking like regular thyme but one of the greatest attributes that it has is that it can be used as a ground cover which is very resilient.  Many people use it as a lawn substitute or between pavers and stepping stones as it spreads as a low, dense mats, which sprawl randomly and quickly fill in areas as a ground cover, it will tolerate a low level of foot traffic.  Bees love it!

Growing creeping thyme is a simple as it is not fussy in relation to soils and light exposures. Although this ground cover prefers well-drained lightly textured soils, it will grow quite well in less than desirable medium soils and thrive from sun to light shade environments.

It has very small pretty white flowers, is evergreen and is considered hardy.  Plants can be easily split to give your more plants. To maintain the plant, you can prune creeping thyme in the spring to maintain a compact appearance and again after the small white flowers are spent if additional shaping is required.
